Small Footprint, Ingenious Design

Designer Lana Dullaghan has transformed this 1890s Portobello bungalow into a warm and beautifully practical city home, using earthy colour, Irish art and imaginative storage to bring old and new together.

When Lana Dullaghan, the designer behind Lana Dullaghan Designs, became involved in this Portobello project, the compact period property lacked some of the basic ingredients needed for comfortable living. ‘The project involved transforming a vintage bungalow dating back to the 1890s into a warm and inviting home,’ Lana explains. ‘Originally, the property felt unwelcoming and lacked essential living spaces, with no proper dining or sitting areas, just uncomfortable benches.’ The brief from the owner, Roy, was to create a home suited to city living while resolving those functional problems. The completed renovation now revolves around an open-plan kitchen, dining space and sitting area, while the wider scheme includes a new bedroom and bathroom.
