Out with the Old

Patricia has her mother to thank for finding her the perfect home in Belfast, though it didn’t seem so at first glance.

A girl’s best friend is her mother – just ask the owner of this stylish Belfast home. ‘I hadn’t even been looking for a new house when my mum spotted this one!’ admits Patricia. ‘My son and I had been living in an apartment close by but we were fast running out of space.’

‘I loved the area – it’s close to Queen’s University with cafés and restaurants and plenty of buzz, as well as a real sense of community. Mum, though, had obviously picked up on our bulging apartment and spotted what was actually quite an unlikely potential new home at first glance.’

On viewing the tired 1960s villa Patricia was only too aware of the massive amount of work it needed. ‘For a start, I wasn’t hugely in love with its 1960s exterior. Inside the original layout was boxy with a small kitchen and bedrooms which weren’t well proportioned at all.’
