Introverted Planting

We are all familiar with the loud, flamboyant blooms of Dahlias or Peonies, always centre stage in the garden and vying to be centre of attention, screaming ‘Pick me’ when you pass them in a garden centre. They are essential members of any garden planting scheme but there are many other plants which quietly work away, without drawing attention to themselves.

Recently, I listened to a radio documentary on introverted people. Its a subject I never really considered before. A lot of what the documentary maker said about the need for introverts to balance extroverted people in society, made me think of my garden. I started to wonder at all the ‘introverted’ plants that never demand attention, never needing the applause but quietly getting on
with the job.
