A New Chapter

On a leafy street in Belfast’s BT9, designer Atelier Branco & Fairley has sensitively reimagined a period property balancing a light-filled modern extension with the character of the original home.

Dating from the turn of the 20th century, this 14-room house sits within the Malone Conservation Area and carries influences from both the Arts and Crafts movement and the emerging Art Deco era. For Belfast-based designers Victor Branco and James Fairley, this architectural heritage provided a rich back story for a home that respects its past while functioning entirely for the present. ‘The house was originally extended and refurbished approximately 10 or 15 years ago, with a modest kitchen extension to the rear,’ Victor Branco explains. ‘This worked at the time but was no longer suitable for modern family life.’
