The iconic Keem Bay at the western end of Achill Island is one of Ireland’s most popular and most photographed beaches. Crystal clear waters, sandy white strands and ancient secrets set in stone, Keem Bay is a must see place to explore when visiting Mayo. Accessible for cars via a clifftop road that was constructed in the late 1960s along the route of an older track. This road also crosses a local geological boundary exposing a seam of amethyst quartz in the cliffside. Amethyst is a semiprecious stone that has accumulated numerous folkloric associations spanning spirituality, protection against the supernatural and thieves, and most commonly, used as a love charm.
