When a Kitchen Becomes a Living Space

A major renovation on the south Dublin coast gave this homeowner the chance to rethink the kitchen entirely. Rhatigan & Hick’s brief was simple but ambitious: create a functional family space that feels more like an extension of the living room than a traditional kitchen.

Is this project a new build, extension, or renovation? This was a major renovation-rebuild to a large property on the south Dublin coast. What was the brief? The client was looking for a unique kitchen design that wasn’t going to ‘look like a kitchen’. They were very specific about wanting to create a kitchen off the main lounge that was to feel more like an extended living space. They didn’t want an over-cluttered room of cabinetry and that was the main driving force behind the tall bank of integrated cabinetry that is designed to look like a wall of wall panelling when all the doors are closed.
