As February rolls around, every supermarket explodes in colours of pink and red, roses double in price, and boxed chocolates suddenly become heart-shaped. If that’s not enough of a reminder to book a romantic restaurant early, then the cheesy Hallmark cards saying ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ should do the job. While this holiday started as a celebration of love, it’s not uncommon for those to dread it. In fact, Valentine’s Day Depression is very real. A 2004 consumer sentiment survey revealed that many people experienced an increase in depression, rumination, and social anxiety for up to three weeks following the holiday. When it’s so easy to compare yourself to others and couples, remember that February 14th doesn’t need to be about other people.
