Light And Joy

When Lynda and her husband John set out to transform their traditional Drumbeg property, the ambition was to turn a dark, inward-facing house into one filled with light, warmth and connection to the garden.

Bringing light into this home was a priority. With both homeowners trained in architecture and interiors, the result was always going to be striking. They created a wrap-around extension that reorients the footprint of the house and gave them a template to pour their design sensibilities into. ‘The original house is very traditional,’ homeowner, Lynda begins. ‘It had the staircase in the middle with two rooms either side, but it had a very small kitchen. The rooms were nicely proportioned, looking forward onto the road and Black Mountain, but there was no connection with the garden. You always felt the kitchen was too small, and the entertaining room was old-fashioned. We wanted to flip it so that the majority of rooms now face south and we could use the natural light.’
