Lisbon

This capital city is armed with gothic grit and glamour and is blessed with being one of the few capital cities to be so close to the coast. Perfect for a long weekend getaway over the Easter break, this Portuguese destination offers sun, sand, history and city-life all in one.

Things to see and do

Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon and will give you a taste of the city’s historic side. It is connected by a maze of cobbled streets and stairways that lead up from the river to the castle, lined with ancient houses, boutique shops and trendy bars. You will also enjoy the amazing views of the rest of the city from the hills of Alfama, especially if you visit Lisbon Castle which offers a great vantage point. While there you can explore the battlements of the castle freely while taking in the cityscape below.

To see the other side of Lisbon, and the one that is thought of the world over, you must visit Baixa. This area of Lisbon was completely destroyed by an earthquake, only to be rebuilt in the grid-and-block layout that the city is renowned for, and its rebuild was considered revolutionary in the mid-18th century. Unlike Alfama, Baixa is made up of wide avenues and grand plazas and is described as the heart of Lisbon. Rossio Square in the Biaxa district is always buzzing, with the surrounding cafes and picturesque fountain, it is a great spot to people watch or take a break from shopping in the area.
